Behind every transformative project lies careful engineering and design. As our team prepares for Haven Coin’s launch, we wanted to share some considerations that shaped our approach to creating the Transaction-to-Shelter model.

The problem with traditional charity models

67% of donors cite trust concerns as barriers to charitable giving. This is because traditional donations often lack transparency, so you have little visibility as to how your contribution was actually used.

What’s more problematic is that traditional donation models rely on ‘best intentions’ (the recurring goodwill of donors). These ‘best intentions’ mainly appeal to high-net-worth individuals seeking tax advantages. Unfortunately such approach excludes millions of everyday people who could contribute meaningfully at smaller scales.

So after a single donation funds an initiative, what happens next? Wait and keep fingers crossed for another donor to appear? Wait for the next tax year? While all this time we missed the collective power of broader community support.

Haven Project was created to break this cycle, with Haven Coin as our first initiative – a crypto token designed to build a self-generating, progressively growing funding mechanism. Unlike traditional charity, our success does not depend on ‘best intentions’, instead we transform everyday trading activities into continuous funding for homeless support. That’s blockchain philanthropy 2.0.

Technical Decisions

Our selection of Polygon as our blockchain foundation wasn’t a pick out of a hat. With some of the lowest fees around, fast transactions, and scalability, Polygon helps us to make sure that more funds reach homeless initiatives. Polygon also provides enterprise grade security through its validator network while maintaining eco-friendly operations with minimal energy consumption. Perfect alignment with our social impact mission!

We set the transaction fee (1%) deliberately low after analyzing many other projects. We noticed that large fees can put people off trading (or even buying in the first place), they also trigger warning flags on crypto aggregators which deter participation. This is the opposite of what we want, because trading volumes grow our Shelter Fund.

Importantly, we wanted to make an impact from day one. That’s why we allocated 10% of total token supply directly to the Shelter Fund, along with 10% of presale proceeds. This means we already have a ‘rolling start’ and don’t need to wait for trading volume to build before beginning our mission. We CAN and WILL start making a difference right away.

Our non-upgradeable smart contracts encode our charitable mission permanently. Unlike projects where terms change at the team’s discretion, Haven Coin’s charitable allocation is permanently encoded, creating certainty for our community and beneficiaries.

We also implemented strategic burns of Haven Coin which are tied to specific milestones (e.g. first donation made, our first shelter initiative, etc). This creates a virtuous cycle where impact drives value, and value enables greater impact.

Looking Forward

As we progress towards presale and launch, our development team is finalizing smart contracts and building mechanisms to share Haven Stories. These are real stories of impact – connecting digital transactions to physical changes in peoples lives.

Transparency remains central, with dedicated wallet addresses for each fund that will be visible to all. Our community can verify in real-time how resources flow from transactions to implementation.
